The Indian stock market opened on an upbeat note, retreated from higher levels and then plunged sharply as the rupee tumbled to a new all-time low. The Sensex, up nearly 325 points early on, ended at 17,954.63 (provisional) with a loss of 291.41 points or 1.6% and Nifty closed at 5323.60, down 77.85 points or 1.44%, after declining to 5268.45.
