The key domestic benchmarks ended on a flat note, with a positive bias today as investors were hesitant to take major positions in stocks ahead of the inflation numbers due tomorrow, that may well decide the course of the RBI action later this month.
The BSE SENSEX closed at 16,880.51, up by 17.71 points or by 0.11 per cent and the NSE Nifty ended at 5,121.45, up by 5.55 points or by 0.11 per cent.
The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 16,944.11 and intraday low of 16,792.87. The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 5,144.9 and intraday low of 5,095.45.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 445.90,+3.03%), Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 268.70,+2.83%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1349.75,+2.60%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 593.05,+2.37%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 439.80,+1.71%), among others.

The markets gained moderately today with capital goods, banking and power being the lead gainers. Oil &gas, healthcare and IT, too, made significant gains while realty, FMCG and consumer durables lost significantly.
The BSE Sensex ended with modest gains Tuesday, rising 32 points to 16,020.64, while the broader Nifty index edged up 15 points to 4,863. The Sensex shed 120 points from the day's high amid increased selling in the last hour of trade. The Nifty nearly hit the 4,900 mark in intraday trade, but ended substantially lower.

Markets had gained nearly 1% in early trade tracking strength in Asian stocks and the rupee. The rupee later gave up gains and slipped against the dollar. The volatility index shot up over 2.5% indicating the choppiness in trade.
